Rihlat is a biological anthropologist by training. Throughout her career she has taken an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complex determinants of maternal and child health.
After obtaining her doctorate degree at the National Museum of Natural History of Paris (France), Rihlat was a researcher at the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa), and then an assistant professor at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). In these institutions, Rihlat led several field-based research projects in collaboration with local and international institutions, taught and trained students and research staff, and supported civil society public health campaigns.
Rihlat is passionate about traveling as it always challenges her understanding of people, cultures, and contexts. She likes to say that both her work and passion are well summarized in what her name refers to in Arabic: a literature genre which describes travel in search of knowledge.
