David Reif

Scientist 1 at Amyris

David Reif has worked in a variety of roles in the field of biotechnology. In 2009, they were a Team Member of the Illinois Synthetic Biology iGEM Team, where they engineered simple decoder logic in E. coli through sRNA regulation. This team was awarded one of 19 silver medals out of 113 teams worldwide. In 2011, they worked as a Research Intern at Archer Daniels Midland, where they investigated new feedstock for biomass to biocrude process, tested methods of decreasing water use, and evaluated potential of waste streams for use as an animal feed. From 2012-2014, they worked at Edeniq, Inc. as a Research and Development Scientist and Research Assistant and Lab Technician, where they designed and conducted experiments investigating fermentation technology and process improvements, supported products at bench, pilot, and commercial scale, and traveled to client facilities to conduct product trials. From 2014-2015, they worked at the Energy Biosciences Institute-UC Berkeley as an Assistant Specialist in Analytical Chemistry, where they developed methods for analysis of biomass composition and performed research projects to further develop existing analytical protocols. Finally, from 2015-present, they have worked at Amyris as a Scientist 1, Senior Associate Scientist, and Associate Scientist 3. In their role as Associate Scientist 3, they have led a high-throughput PCR pipeline, adjusted workflows to save days worth of work and reduce costs, and implemented data tracking procedures to monitor success rates and capacity fluctuations.

David Reif obtained a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2010. David then received an MS in Bioenergy from the same institution in 2011. David also holds a CS50x Intro to Computer Science certification from CS50.
