My experience in proofreading is somewhat atypical. I took the scenic route to become a freelance proofreader. Here are just a few of my stops along the way:

I was an executive assistant for many years, and proofreading and copyediting were integral to my roles within the various organisations I have worked for. 

I completed a BA in Health Sciences and Social Services—specialising in counselling psychology.

I completed a graduate diploma in marketing, a diploma in proofreading, and a creative writing course. 

I’m a grammar nerd and I love everything about the English language. Proofreading is as much a hobby for me as it is a vocation.
