Serge Egelman has extensive experience in the field of privacy and security. Serge started their career as a Research Intern at Microsoft in 2008. Serge then worked as a Research Intern at PARC in 2006. In 2009, they joined Brown University as a Postdoctoral Researcher, focusing on access control mechanisms and Facebook privacy settings. From 2010 to 2011, they worked as a Scientist at NIST. Serge then joined UC Berkeley as a Research Scientist in 2011, specializing in smartphone applications and user preferences regarding privacy and sensor data. In 2013, they became a Senior Researcher at ICSI, where they conducted large-scale studies on human behavior to improve web security and explored privacy and security issues related to wearable and IoT devices. Serge later became the Research Director of the Usable Security & Privacy Group at ICSI in 2016, leading research on how human factors impact privacy and security. Currently, Serge is the Founder and CTO of AppCensus, a company that provides mobile app privacy analysis at scale.
Serge Egelman completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Virginia between 2000 and 2004. Serge then pursued further education at Carnegie Mellon University, where they received their PhD in Computer Science from 2004 to 2009.
