The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) was formed in 1982 by a handful of pioneering women engineers led by Engr. (Mrs.) J. O. Maduka and was formally inaugurated in 1983. The association was originally intended as a pressure group at a time when most men hiring engineers preferred women in the kitchen rather than on construction sites or behind the desk carrying out engineering designs.

APWEN is a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), a non-governmental umbrella body for all engineers in Nigeria. Unlike other NSE divisions, APWEN is exclusively composed of professional female engineers across all engineering disciplines. The association is also a member of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS).

At inception, APWEN had only six members. Today, its membership has grown to over 3,000 professionals spread across the country, and it also includes University Student Members nurturing the next generation of women engineers who will contribute to a technologically developed nation.

Vision:
To be a catalyst for the advancement of women in the engineering profession towards national and global technological development.

Mission:
To continuously increase awareness that Engineering is a career for girls, thereby increasing the numerical strength of female engineers.
