Anil Bawa-Cavia

Anil Bawa-Cavia has extensive experience in data engineering and analytics. Anil is currently working at Artsy as the Lead Data Engineer, where they are responsible for creating a data platform vision and roadmap. Anil is also leading projects in unified orchestration, warehousing, and ETL reliability, while collaborating with ML engineers on various models.

Prior to their current role, Anil worked at SumUp as the Lead Data Engineer, leading a team of data scientists, analysts, and engineers in the fintech industry. Anil also managed an Airflow cluster and engineered ML models.

Anil has also held positions at Artsy as the Director of Data Science & Analytics, where they enabled data-driven decision making and managed data warehousing. Anil also worked as a Senior/Staff Data Engineer, focusing on search, classification, ranking, similarity, and recommendation of art works.

Before Artsy, Anil gained experience as a Data Engineer at EyeEm, where they worked on distributed machine learning using Spark. Anil also worked at Lumi.news as a Senior Software Engineer, focusing on building a real-time, scalable recommender system.

Anil's early career includes working as a Lead Backend Engineer at Last.fm, where they developed scalable, personalized streaming radio and led the development of the public API.

Anil Bawa-Cavia completed their Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering at UCL from 1999 to 2001. Anil then pursued further education and obtained an MSc in Computer Science from Imperial College London in 2004 to 2005. However, they did not finish their PhD in Computer Science at UCL and left the program between 2009 and 2011.
