Shobhakar Dhakal

Dean, School of Environment, Resources & Development at Asian Institute of Technology

Shobhakar Dhakal is the current Dean of the School of Environment, Resources, and Development at the Asian Institute of Technology. Prior to this, they were a Guest Research Scholar with the Transition to New Technology (TNT) Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) from November 2009 to October 2013.

From April 2006 to July 2012, Dhakal served as the Executive Director of the Global Carbon Project, an international collaboration that aims to develop a comprehensive picture of the global carbon cycle. During their time with the project, they helped establish its website, www.globalcarbonproject.org, which is now a comprehensive resource on carbon emissions and their impact on climate change.

Prior to their work with the Global Carbon Project, Dhakal was a Senior Policy Researcher and Project Manager of Urban Programs at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies from April 2001 to March 2006. In this role, they worked on developing strategies to mitigate environmental problems in cities. Shobhakar also helped establish the institute's website, www.iges.or.jp, which provides information on a range of environmental issues.

Shobhakar Dhakal has a Ph.D. in Urban Energy and Urban Heat Island Mitigation from The University of Tokyo, an M.E. in Energy Economics and Planning from the Asian Institute of Technology, and a B.E. in Power Systems from the National Institute of Technology Surat.
