Ir. Yvan De Mesmaeker (M.Sc.Eng.) serves as the Secretary General of both the European Corporate Security Association (ECSA) since 2005 and ATHENA, the Alumni Association of the Graduates from the High Studies Security & Defence since 2009. Currently, ir. Yvan De Mesmaeker also holds the title of Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the Kingdom of Belgium since 2024 and is Managing Director & Senior Strategic Security Advisor at Omega Risk since 1991. Additional roles include Board Member positions at the Royal Higher Institute for Defence, EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations, and Belgian Intelligence Studies Centre (BISC), along with international collaboration with the Counter Terrorism Preparedness Network. Academic contributions include being an Academic Counselor at Ghent University and a Collaborateur Scientifique at the University of Liège. Education includes advanced strategic courses focused on Security & Defense from the European Security and Defence College, Institut des hautes études de défense nationale, and Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik, supplemented by degrees from KU Leuven, Ghent University, and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

ATHENA
ATHENA is the Alumni Association of the Graduates from the High Studies Security & Defence, organized by the Royal High Institute for Defence – RHID and Egmont, The Royal Institute for International Relations. The Royal High Institute for Defence (RHID) is a think tank and a forum for discussing matters of Security and Defence. It determines and manages the research programmes of the Belgian Defence Ministry and organizes the programme of Advanced Defence Studies for the higher echelons of the military and public authorities. Egmont - The Royal Institute for International Relations, is an independent think-tank which draws on the expertise of its own research fellows, as well as that of external specialists, to provide analysis and to suggest international policy options. Benefiting from the role of Brussels in the global arena and from the prestigious setting of the Egmont Palace, the Institute offers a forum to visiting Heads of State, Heads of government, representatives of international organisations, foreign ministers and other political figures.
