Jonathan Benge has a diverse and extensive work experience in various environmental and ecological roles. Jonathan has worked at Auckland Council since 2015, holding positions such as Head of Research, Evaluation and Monitoring, Manager Research and Evaluation, and Team Manager for Water Quality. Prior to that, they worked as the Auckland Project Leader at the Environmental Protection Authority. Jonathan has also worked at Auckland Transport, Network Rail, Scott Wilson, Dstl, Sparsholt College, and Natural England, where they gained expertise in project management, ecological surveying, impact assessment, and conservation.

Jonathan Benge holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Science from the University of Hertfordshire, which they obtained between 1997 and 2004. Jonathan also has a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Zoology/Animal Biology from the University of Southampton, completed from 1993 to 1996. In addition, they earned a Post Graduate Certificate in Post compulsory education & training from the University of Greenwich, which they completed in 2007. Furthermore, they have obtained the certification in "Making Good Decisions - RMA hearings accreditation" in June 2013.
