Catherine Smith has extensive work experience in the field of human resources and organizational development. Catherine started their career at Counties Manukau District Health Board in 2006, where they held various roles including Human Resources Manager and HR Project Manager. Catherine then moved on to Ko Awatea in 2011, where they served as the Manager of Workforce & Leadership Capability. Catherine later joined the New Zealand Human Rights Commission in 2012 as a Senior Advisor for Organizational Development and Human Resources. Most recently, they worked at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, where they held multiple positions including Manager, Head, and eventually Director of People and Organization.

Catherine Smith's education history includes a Bachelor of Social Work with honors (BSW(hons)) from an unknown institution, completed from 1994 to 1998. Catherine then pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Business (PGDipBus) with a specialization in Human Resources Management at The University of Auckland from 2005 to 2008. Finally, they attained a Master of Human Resources and Organizational Development (MHROD) degree from Southern Cross University, which they completed from 2013 to 2017.
