P. Namperumalsamy

Trustee at Aurolab

Dr. Namperumalsamy played an instrumental role in developing Aurolase 532 YAG Green Laser, a low cost device, for diabetic retinopathy patients which is marketed by Aurolab. The development of retinal products by the Pharmaceutical division of Aurolab is under his guidance. In 2010, TIME magazine named Dr. Nam is one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shree award by the Government of India, 2006. He is internationally renowned for his pioneering work in developing the field of retina services in India.

He joined Aravind Eye Hospital and PG Institute of Ophthalmology as Chief Medical Officer in 1976. Under his chairmanship Aravind Eye Hospital received the 2010 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, which is awarded annually to an organization that does extraordinary work to alleviate human suffering. He began his career as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Madurai Medical College in 1970.

Dr. P. Namperumalsamy holds his MBBS, DO, and MS from Madras University.
