Position Summary

The ophthalmic technician position is one where you get to work directly with patients and often with the physicians in delivering care to our patients. Our technicians report high levels of satisfaction with their roles because they get to help save people’s sight each day. The days can be long due to our routine regional travel schedule, but we find the results we get to be well worth the effort.

Our ophthalmic technicians gather information from patients, take images, notate information into patient charts, and help set up for exams and treatments - and much more. Great job for those interested in veterinary technician, medical assistant, behavioral technician, phlebotomist, radiology technician, and more. We will train the right candidates.

Ophthalmic Technician Duties

• Triage patients and record consistent and accurate documentation of patient's medical history
• Obtain patient’s chief complaint and screen (e.g., visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, measure IOP, pupillary check, ocular motility, dilate pupils, check blood pressure, etc.)
• Communicate with team members, team leader, physician about patient care and efficiency
• Communicate with patients using a caring tone and provide thorough communication before and after their visit with the physician, providing education as needed
• Prep exam room and patient charts for physician
• Perform macular OCT imaging. May perform other retinal imaging as needed.
• Prep for and assist with in-office procedures as needed
• May recruit patients for clinical trials as needed

Required Attributes

• Demonstrated effectiveness showing courtesy, diligence, integrity, and teamwork
• Strong interpersonal skills (effective listening, clear communication, effective customer problem resolution, warm demeanor)
• Able to work long and irregular hours, including overtime, and travel to different locations.
• Ability to master multiple computer systems (data entry and data retrieval)
• Ability to master ophthalmology and retina terminology
• Valid Texas driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and active personal car insurance
• A reliable means of transportation between local clinics during the work day (mileage is reimbursed)
• Willingness to drive company vehicle on day trips

Desired Attributes

• Experience in a busy optometry, ophthalmology, and/or retina clinic
• COA, COT, or COMT certification
• Bilingual in Spanish a plus

Physical Demands and Requirements

Prolonged sitting up to 4 hours a day; stand and walk; talk and hear both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle and feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds on occasion. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes viewing multiple computer screens, close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Viewing images and operating computer devices constantly

Other Position Details

• Schedule varies depending on assigned role and/or assigned physician
• Very occasional weekend days may be required but generally Monday to Friday schedule
• Travel within 120 miles is required (company-provided transportation, day trips only), which can mean early mornings and long days.
• Hourly pay (FLSA non-exempt, eligible for overtime)
