David Engel

David Engel is a highly experienced professional in the field of foreign affairs and diplomacy. Currently serving as a Senior Analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute since September 2020, Engel previously held the position of Ambassador to Mexico and Central American nations at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from December 2015 to November 2019. Engel's earlier roles include Minister-Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta from January 2012 to June 2015, and Assistant Secretary at DFAT, where Engel led policy planning from 2010 to 2012. Engel's career commenced at the Office of National Assessments as Assistant Director-General from January 2005 to May 2008. Engel holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Edinburgh and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English literature from the University of New South Wales.
