Bertrand Higy

ML Scientist at Ava

Bertrand Higy is a ML Scientist at Ava. Bertrand was previously a postdoctoral researcher at Tilburg University from June 2019 to August 2021 within the Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence group, working on visually grounded spoken language understanding. From May 2015 to April 2019, they were a PhD student in Bioengineering and Robotics at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, with a curriculum in Advanced and Humanoid Robotics. Bertrand's work in the field of automatic speech recognition in the context of humanoid robotics tries to take inspiration from child development and machine learning techniques such as multitask, curriculum or transfer learning, in order to build more robust DNN-based speech recognition systems. The ultimate goal of this work is build a robust vocal command system for the iCub robot. Bertrand Higy has also been a teaching assistant at Université Lumière Lyon 2 from September 2009 to January 2010, and a software engineer at Abase Europe from December 2010 to April 2015.

Bertrand Higy has a Master's degree in Cognitive Sciences from Université Lumière Lyon 2, a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg I), and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg I). Bertrand also has a Diploma of Higher Education in Mathematics and Computer Science from Université de Haute-Alsace Mulhouse-Colmar. In addition, they have certification from Coursera in Machine Learning and Compilers, and from Stanford University in Introduction à l'intelligence artificielle.

Their manager is Skinner Cheng, CTO & Co-Founder. Some of their coworkers include Sandro Pasquali - Principle Engineer, Juan Pablo Ospina - Data Engineer, and Ilya Vlasov - QA Engineer.
