Michael Baine

Chief Designer at Axiom Space

Dr. Baine serves as the Chief Engineer at Axiom Space. Prior to joining Axiom Space, Dr. Baine held the position chief of engineering at Intuitive Machines where he was involved in the development of autonomous intelligent systems and lifting body re-entry vehicles. Prior to this he was the chief engineer for Project Morpheus at the NASA Johnson Space Center which developed a planetary lander with precision landing capabilities for human exploration.

Originally from Long Beach, California, Dr. Baine attended the University of California San Diego, where he received degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering (B.S. ‘93) and Physics (B.S. ‘93, M.S. ‘98, C. Phil. ‘98, Ph.D. ‘00). His doctoral work, supervised by Dr. Sally K. Ride, focused on the experimental investigation of electron beam laser interactions; specifically, the generation of laser synchrotron radiation. Upon graduation, Dr. Baine was awarded a National Research Council Post-Doctoral Fellowship to study Electric Propulsion with Dr. Franklin Chang Diaz.

In 2001, he received a permanent position within the Engineering Directorate at the Johnson Space Center. Successive responsibilities included propulsion development for Shuttle and Station, Columbia accident investigation scenario team, crew escape propulsion lead for OSP, Orion propulsion System Manager, Orion Principle Lead Engineer for Test and Verification, and Chief Engineer for Project Morpheus.
