Axion is building a fully encapsulated laser drilling system to reach the deep, hot rock that conventional drilling can’t economically touch.

Most of the world’s geothermal energy sits below three kilometers, in rock too hard and too hot for rotary drilling to reach at viable cost. Drilling is the bottleneck — up to 75% of the capital cost of a next-generation geothermal well, rising sharply with depth. Solve drilling, and clean firm power becomes available almost anywhere on Earth.

Axion’s approach places the laser system inside the drill head, at depth, rather than transmitting energy from the surface through fiber or waveguide. This encapsulated architecture eliminates the transmission bottleneck that has constrained every prior energy-drilling effort.

The technology is built from proven subsystems drawn from oil and gas and aerospace. The innovation is the integration. We’re not inventing new physics — we’re assembling existing capability in a way no one has before.

Founded by engineers from SpaceX, with a NASA Goddard demonstration behind us. Geothermal is the wedge. The architecture reaches further.
