Sung Nee George Chu

Vice President, Technology and Chief Scientist at AXT

Dr. George Chu joined AXT in April 2012 as Chief Scientist and was initially responsible for product research and enhancements in AXT’s indium phosphide (InP) product line, and is credited with successfully positioning it for growth and customer acceptance. Dr. Chu is a Bell Labs veteran. He joined AT&T Bell Labs in 1980 in the epitaxial growth group of InP, focusing on devices for optical fiber communication systems. In this position, Dr. Chu was responsible for structural and material characterization of InP. In 1986 he became a distinguished member of technical staff (DMTS). Dr. Chu has significant scientific contributions in the development of advanced photonic devices, from distributed feedback-DFB lasers, electro-absorption modulated laser-EML, quantum cascade laser-QCL, to wide bandgap nitride-based devices. In 1991, he was awarded Bell Labs President’s Quality Award. From 2003 to 2012, Dr. Chu was Senior Director at Multiplex Inc. and was responsible for overhauling the front-end manufacturing process for EML devices and successfully improving their reliability.

Dr. Chu holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from National Taiwan University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science from University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. He has more than 400 publications, 15 patents, and 15 edited and co-edited conference proceedings volumes. Currently, he is a fellow of the American Physical Society (since 1987) and The Electrochemical Society (since 1981).
