Vernon Herron

Director, Officer Safety And Wellness at Baltimore Police Department

Vernon Herron has a diverse work experience in the field of public safety and homeland security. Vernon currently serves as the Director of Officer Safety and Wellness for the Baltimore Police Department, where they oversee programs aimed at improving the physical fitness, nutrition, and mental health of police officers. Vernon is also responsible for implementing the Early Intervention System to address violations of police policies.

Prior to their current role, Herron worked as a Senior Policy Analyst at the University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security, specializing in public safety strategies for urban communities. Vernon led a team that provided training to senior government officials and police executives in crisis and emergency management.

Herron held a significant leadership position as the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Public Safety and Director of Homeland Security in Prince George's County from 2003 to 2010. In this role, they oversaw the public safety departments, including the police department, fire department, and department of corrections. Vernon also served as the Director of Homeland Security, managing public safety communications, emergency management, and the homeland security administration.

Their extensive career in law enforcement began with the Maryland State Police, where they served for 27 years and retired in 2003. Vernon held various positions during their tenure, culminating in the role of Major and Assistant Bureau Chief, responsible for the field operations in the Western region of the state.

In addition to their professional experience, Herron also serves as a board member at the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Vernon Herron pursued their education in a chronological manner. In 1972, they attended Springfield College in Illinois, where they obtained their Associate's degree in Art/Art Studies, General. Vernon then engaged in further education at the FBI National Academy in 1996, where they completed a Public Safety Executive Training program. Continuing their academic journey, Vernon attended the University of Maryland Global Campus from 1998 to 2000. Vernon attained a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree in Criminal Justice/Police Science during this period. Lastly, from 2000 to 2002, they attended The Johns Hopkins University - Carey Business School and obtained a degree in Management, specializing in Police Executive Leadership.
