David Roberts

Chair, Court of Directors at Bank of England

David Roberts is the Chair of Court. Court acts as a unitary board, setting the organisation’s strategy and budget and taking key decisions on resourcing and appointments. As Chair of the Court, David is responsible for leadership of the board and ensuring its effectiveness on all aspects of its role.

David is an Advisory Board Member of The Mentoring Foundation and a Member of the Strategy Board of Henley Business School, Reading University.

David was Chair of Beazley plc, a FTSE150 global Speciality Insurance business, between 2017 and 2022 and Chair of Nationwide Building Society from 2014 – 2022. He was Vice Chair of NHS England from 2010 – 2021 and Group Deputy Chair of Lloyds Banking Group plc from 2010 to 2014 where he was also a member of the Audit, Remuneration and Nominations Committees.

David has had a 24 year career at Barclays plc between 1983 and 2006 where he held various senior management positions, culminating in his appointments as a Main Board Executive Director and Member of the Group Executive Committee. In 2006, David joined Bawag PSK AG, Austria’s second largest retail bank, as Chair and Chief Executive.

David is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Financial Services. David holds an MBA and Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from Henley Business School, and a BSc in Mathematics and Applications from the University of Birmingham. In 2019, he was made a CBE for services to Financial Services and the NHS, and in 2020 was awarded the Gold Medal by the Chartered Institute of Management.
