Ofelia Garcia

Trustee at Bank Street College of Education

Ofelia Garcia is currently a Trustee at Bank Street College of Education. Ofelia previously worked as an Adjunct Lecturer at City University of New York-Brooklyn College from August 2020 to December 2020, teaching an undergraduate course on Children’s and Young Adult Literature in Spanish. From July 2020 to August 2021, they were the Middle Grade Summer Program Director and Language Arts Teacher at De La Salle Academy, developing Language Arts curricula for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade summer program, as well as teaching eighth grade language arts. Ofelia also directed the summer program, supported teachers with remote teaching, and coordinated the virtual summer program celebration. In addition, they facilitated reflection sessions with Bank Street Graduate School of Education students who were partnering with Language Arts teachers. From July 2018 to July 2018, they were a Language Arts Teacher at De La Salle Academy. From August 2012 to August 2016, they worked as a Literacy Consultant at Teachers College of Columbia University. And from September 2009 to August 2019, they were a Bilingual Education Clinical Doctoral Lecturer at Hunter College.

Ofelia Garcia completed their undergraduate studies at New York University, where they earned a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies. Ofelia then went on to complete a Master's Degree in Childhood Education with a Bilingual Extension at Hunter College. After that, they earned a second Master's Degree in Sociology of Religion from Princeton Theological Seminary. Finally, they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Urban Education: Bilingualism from The Graduate Center, City University of New York.
