Richard L. Smith

Trustee at Bates College

Richard L. Smith has been a Principal at Bay Resource Corporation since 1983 when he founded the company along with several colleagues. Based in Woburn, MA, Bay Resource has engaged in a variety of business consulting projects and investment activities. Through these engagements, Rick has served as an officer or director of numerous affiliated companies, including Disruptive Apps in Boston, Hi-Tech Transport Electronics in Eugene, OR, and Vanalco, Inc. in Vancouver, WA, often with a particular focus on leading or advising the company’s financial operations.

Prior to founding Bay Resource, Rick was employed as a project manager at Boston Consulting Group and as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. He is a graduate of Princeton University (A. B. in philosophy), Yale University (Ph. D. in philosophy), and Harvard Business School (M. B. A.). He was a trustee of Phillips Exeter Academy from 1993 to 2003, leading a project to reform and expand the school’s financial aid program; he also served on the search committee for Exeter’s 13th principal and has continued as a non-trustee member of its investment committee. He has also served as a trustee of The Rivers School in Weston, MA, where he was a member of the search committee for its new principal and has been a volunteer in several roles at Princeton.
