Angelo Scorpio is a seasoned Senior Principal Investigator at BNBI since July 2009, overseeing Principal Investigators and Research Staff Supervisors while managing projects that assess the risk properties of bacterial threat agents for national biological risk evaluations. Responsibilities include designing and executing laboratory research with Select Agents in high-containment environments, supervising technical staff, and contributing to scientific literature and presentations. Prior experience includes serving as a Senior Analyst at ANSER and a Senior Scientist at USAMRIID, where groundbreaking work included the development of therapeutic strategies for anthrax and coordination of BSL-3 research activities. Earlier, at AVANT Immunotherapeutics, research focused on treatments for chronic viral and bacterial infections. Organizational leadership is reflected in roles such as Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC (BNBI) manages and operates the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The NBACC mission is to provide the scientific basis for characterization of biological threats and bioforensic analysis to support attribution of their planned or actual use. BNBI Corporate Governance - The Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC is a non-profit, single-purpose (i.e., focused solely on the DHS FFRDC contract), company with a Board of Directors and Company Officers - President, Treasurer and Secretary. BNBI is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Battelle Memorial Institute. Both DHS and the BNBI Board of Directors provide oversight for NBACC/BNBI. The BNBI Board of Directors provides corporate governance implemented through engaged Board Committees and regular interactions. National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC) mission as delineated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive-10 and FBI requirements, is to establish and maintain "always available" bioforensic analyses and to expand this capability to unknown and future biological threat agents to support attribution investigations. National Biological Threat Characterization Center (NBTCC) mission is to establish the scientific basis for the threat posed by traditional, emerging, enhanced and advanced biological agents and life science-related technologies to support and inform Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE) biodefense preparedness, response and recovery decisions.
