Hank Askin

Deputy Director, Infrastructure Operations at Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC

Hank Askin has a diverse work experience spanning several roles and industries. Hank began their career in 1989 as an Information Systems Analyst in the US Army, where they worked until 2002. In 2000, they transitioned to Point To Point Consulting as an Information Security & Support Consultant. In 2003, Askin took on the role of Deputy Director, Information Assurance at Engineering Systems Solutions, Inc. Simultaneously, they joined USAR NCRIOC as an Intrusion Analyst, serving until 2011. Askin then joined Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC in 2007, where they have held two positions: Chief Information Officer and Deputy Director, Infrastructure Operations.

Hank Askin completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Technical Management from DeVry University from 2004 to 2006. Prior to that, they pursued an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Applied Science from The George Washington University from 1997 to 1999.

In addition to their formal education, Hank has obtained several certifications. In 2000, they became a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). In 2002, they achieved the CISSP certification from (ISC)². Hank also holds the Certified Ethical Hacker certification from EC-Council, which they obtained in September 2006. Recently, in September 2019, they completed the IT Leadership Academy from the Innovative Leadership Institute at Battelle Memorial Institute.

Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC

Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC (BNBI) manages and operates the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The NBACC mission is to provide the scientific basis for characterization of biological threats and bioforensic analysis to support attribution of their planned or actual use. BNBI Corporate Governance - The Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC is a non-profit, single-purpose (i.e., focused solely on the DHS FFRDC contract), company with a Board of Directors and Company Officers - President, Treasurer and Secretary. BNBI is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Battelle Memorial Institute. Both DHS and the BNBI Board of Directors provide oversight for NBACC/BNBI. The BNBI Board of Directors provides corporate governance implemented through engaged Board Committees and regular interactions. National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC) mission as delineated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive-10 and FBI requirements, is to establish and maintain "always available" bioforensic analyses and to expand this capability to unknown and future biological threat agents to support attribution investigations. National Biological Threat Characterization Center (NBTCC) mission is to establish the scientific basis for the threat posed by traditional, emerging, enhanced and advanced biological agents and life science-related technologies to support and inform Homeland Security Enterprise (HSE) biodefense preparedness, response and recovery decisions.
