Tu Phan has diverse work experience in mechanical engineering. At the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute, Tu worked as an NSRC Mechanical Design Engineer and NASA DC-8 Mission Director. They collaborated with other engineering staff and independently worked on various projects, including mechanical design, creation of installation drawings/documentation, and structural analysis for science instrument and aircraft-related installations on multiple NASA airborne science aircraft. They also coordinated fabrication, assembly, and final installation of designs and presented design data/concepts to gain flight approval.
Prior to that, Tu worked as a Mechanical Engineer II at Evoqua Water Technologies, where they developed a CAD automation program for custom equipment design and designed large-scale wastewater treatment equipment using Autodesk Inventor.
Tu also gained experience as a Mechanical Engineer at Inspire Composites, where they designed CNC machines and 3D modeled machine parts and assemblies.
Additionally, Tu worked as a CAD drafter at Kayhom LLC, creating 2D drawings for CNC routing wooden furniture, optimizing part layout, and reducing waste material while improving machining speed.
Furthermore, Tu served as a Research Assistant at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where they calculated mechanical properties of high entropy alloys using density functional theory, achieved accurate results, and successfully secured funding for a research project.
Overall, Tu Phan has gained valuable experience in mechanical engineering, particularly in design, analysis, fabrication, and research.
Tu Phan received a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Aerospace Engineering, with a minor in Applied Mechanics, from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2017. They then went on to earn a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the same institution in 2018. In addition to their degrees, Tu Phan obtained certifications in Autodesk Certified Professional: Inventor for Mechanical Design from Autodesk in December 2019, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing from LinkedIn in 2019, and SAP ERP Essential Training from LinkedIn in 2019.
