Matthias Johannes Wachter serves as the Managing Director of the NewSpace Initiative and holds various leadership roles at BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V. since March 2008, including oversight of international cooperation and security policy. Additional contributions include membership in the Program Commission for Space at Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. and serving as Deputy Chair of the Economic Advisory Board at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH. Matthias has a military background as a Lieutenant Colonel (Reserves) in various capacities within Bundeswehr, alongside experience in roles at Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz and Axel Springer. Matthias’ academic qualifications encompass an Executive MBA from ESMT Berlin, a Master of Science in Global Affairs from Rutgers University, and a Diplom-Betriebswirt in International Management from Coburg University, among others.
