James Nunez is an experienced leader in emergency management with a comprehensive background in incident response, business continuity, and fire protection. Currently serving as the Department Head for Emergency Services at Berkeley Lab since June 2020, Nunez oversees critical programs and manages the LBNL Fire Department while ensuring compliance with Department of Energy regulations. Prior to this role, Nunez spent over 25 years with the U.S. Coast Guard, where key positions included Chief of the Incident Management Division at Sector Anchorage, responsible for overseeing all hazards incident response and pollution investigations, and serving as the Federal On Scene Coordinator Representative in San Francisco, leading a team in addressing hazardous incidents in a complex operational environment. Nunez has demonstrated strong collaborative skills with federal, state, and tribal partners, particularly during the 2019 Arctic Shield initiative.
