We create content in a wide range of formats for global distribution, under our publications - TechCabal, Zikoko and Citizen.

TechCabal vividly captures the players, human impact and business of technology in Africa; providing the content, reporting, data and events to help the world understand where tech is taking Africa.

Zikoko is telling the most important stories that matter to young African audiences today, creating timeless and original text, image, meme and video-based content across a range of genres using the most relatable elements of youth culture.

Citizen engages a large audience of young people who are becoming increasingly curious about governance, its processes and their roles in it as well as the importance of the voices of young people in key societal issues.

In addition to the publications, we have two growing business units that serve as stand-alone consultancy and production studios.

TechCabal Insights is TechCabal’s research, data and intelligence unit which provides actionable data on startups and the tech ecosystem across Africa to Investors, entrepreneurs, big tech companies and other players on and off the continent.

Cabal Creative is a strategic communication, design and production studio that works with brands that wish to communicate with African audiences in fresh, engaging and authentic ways.

Head of Growth - Job Details

This is a high-performing senior role requiring top-level strategic audience growth and development expertise. The Head of Growth will be responsible for leading the scaling of BCM’s media products, finding audiences for them and hitting our overall growth targets. It is a high-energy job requiring an ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, especially editorial product teams.

The right candidate should be able to think deeply and strategically about audiences and come up with the right strategies to attract and grow them for BCM. They should also be a versatile digital marketer who lives and breathes insights and analytics and thrives on growing audiences.

This position will primarily own two key remits across our award-winning portfolio of brands: digital platform growth and owned audience acquisition. On the digital platform growth side of things, the successful candidate will work with BCM’s editorial teams to take our distributed media model to new heights; expanding the scale of our audiences on the platforms we’re active on.

The right candidate will also have sound knowledge of omnichannel marketing - working across platforms from TikTok and Instagram to email - and will be able to acquire new audiences (be they readers, viewers or listeners) by advocating for the use of tactics aimed at increasing overall engagement.

As for owned audience acquisition, the Head of Growth will spearhead all activities that convert website readers to subscribers of BCM’s email products and run point on campaign strategies and management to support Editorial product initiatives.

This position calls for someone with top-notch media planning skills who is capable of conceptualising how site functions are best used – including briefing, testing and optimising creatives. They will also be data-driven decision-makers who will relish every opportunity to share insights uncovered. This role will report to the CEO.

The right person for this role will have:

  • Demonstrated experience growing audiences on social media/ digital platforms/ websites (within a media/publishing environment a plus).
  • Demonstrated experience strategizing and managing omnichannel marketing campaigns.
  • Demonstrated experience in acquiring subscribers, and growth hacking.
  • A strong understanding of all core concepts of digital / growth marketing.
  • Strong experience with website analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics).
  • The ability to extract meaningful content trends and performance insights from multiple data sources.
  • Demonstrated copywriting and written communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills.
  • Data analysis skills to consistently review content performance and trends.
  • Paid social experience is a big plus.
  • Basic experience with Content Management Systems such as WordPress
  • Bonus points for data visualisation skills (E.g. Google Data Studio, Power BI).

**Duties Include: **

  • Lead the Growth team and work with Editorial teams to hit BCM’s growth goals.
  • Lead all activities aimed at increasing performance on third-party and referral platforms, including relationship management.
  • Lead all audience acquisition campaigns to convert new subscribers to our email products.
  • Cultivate best practices within content teams on SEO, growth loops, social sharing and other key growth mechanisms.
  • Work hand in glove with the development team to ensure existing and new sites are optimised for audience and client acquisition.
  • Ensure all BCM events and activities have a strong growth and marketing plan, to deliver on audience targets
  • Development and presentation of strong reports and dashboards to ensure that management and teams across the business have strong decision-making info.
  • Continuously analyse social media performance and collaborate with our Editorial teams to develop strategies aimed at increasing audience scale and engagement.
  • Be the expert on the social media tools we currently use and ensure they’re being leveraged in a way that maximises growth outcomes.
  • Plan and manage all campaign amplification and performance.
  • Share content trends and performance insights to both the editorial and the broader business on a regular basis.
  • Be the subject matter expert on social media and digital platforms – proactively seeking out new ways they can be leveraged by BCM.

Working at Big Cabal Media You'll be joining a group of focused, hard-working, creative people who are passionate about doing work that's challenging and fun.

We're a very digital company, working via Slack, Google Docs and cloud-based solutions where possible. We currently have a hybrid-remote setup, with most of the team doing two days in the office each week and working remotely the rest of the time. We typically try to arrange work between 9 am and 6 pm WAT and encourage you to have a good work-life balance.

We care very much about quality and results. Our people get things done fast and well.

While collaborative work will be the norm and is the requirement, people who want to work at BCM must also demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without creating more work for their line managers.
