Managing Editor, Zikoko

Big Cabal Media (BCM) is an African digital media publication creating high-quality media brands and original content with global reach and impact.

Our publications, TechCabal and Zikoko, produce smart and sophisticated content in relatable and easily digestible ways, and currently serve hundreds of thousands of readers on and off the continent. Since launch, our young but immensely talented team has told cutting-edge stories across culture, tech, money, relationship and lifestyle that have changed and are changing the way Africans see themselves and the world sees Africa.

We’re looking for a talented Managing Editor to run daily operations at Zikoko. As Managing Editor, you will supervise and oversee the entire editorial process, from idea generation to publication. You will ensure that all the content produced is of the highest standard.

We’ll trust you to:

• Work with the editor-in-chief to determine the editorial direction and agenda
• Plan and manage all daily editorial operations, ensuring that content is delivered consistently
• Work with the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Director to hire and coach members of the Zikoko Editorial team, and build a strong network of third-party creatives and freelancers
• Ensure that the content produced is highly engaging and delights our audience
• Work with the growth team to ensure that our content reaches the audience by creating effective distribution plans and go-to-market strategies
• Design a high-impact editorial calendar of articles, events, videos, newsletters, etc. and ensure a steady publishing and recycling cadence
• Monitor content engagement metrics to understand how well our content finds new audiences or contributes towards various business goals
• Regularly ensure that the content is delivering on its goal through audience surveys and content audits

You’ll excel in this role if:

• You have experience working as a managing editor or editor in media or another similar fast-paced environment.
• You have exceptional ability in copywriting and editing and are proficient in English.
• You have experience using tools like Google Analytics, WordPress and project management tools.
• You are tapped into the Nigerian youth culture and obsessed with the internet's ins and outs.
• You have a track record of planning and coordinating people and operations.
• You have excellent organisational and leadership skills.
• You are a great communicator and know how to work with young and relentless creators.
• You have a growing knowledge of SEO.
• knowledge of online platforms like WordPress and SEO concepts

• You'll be joining a team of talented, hard-working, disciplined professionals passionate about telling stories that matter and solving complex problems for an African audience.
• We're a digital company currently working almost full-remote (there are occasional in-person strategy sessions and meet-ups, but we work well with colleagues who are not in Lagos or Nigeria). We use Slack, Google Docs, Notion and Airtable to keep on top of things.
• We typically try to arrange work between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. WAT, but we don’t have a stick up our butt about hours. We care about quality and results. Our people get things done fast and well, and we ask them to care for themselves. Burnout isn’t fun or useful.
• While collaborative work will be the norm and requirement, team members who want to work at BCM must also demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently.
