Elmar Dr. Waldschmitt currently serves as the Vorstandsbeauftragter für Strategie, Digitales Innovationsmanagement, and Politi at BIG direkt gesund since January 2019. Additionally, Elmar Dr. Waldschmitt has been the Geschäftsführer of Healthy Hub, a joint venture involving BIG, IKK Südwest, mhplus Krankenkasse, and SBK Siemens BKK, since August 2017. Since September 2016, Elmar Dr. Waldschmitt also holds a position as a lecturer in Versorgungsmanagement at Leibniz-Fachhochschule. Prior to these roles, Elmar Dr. Waldschmitt was the Leiter Unternehmensentwicklung at BIG direkt gesund from October 2007 to December 2018.

BIG direkt gesund is he first online and direct insurer in Germany, covering over 400,000 people in a decidedly non-traditional way, using the Internet, 24 hour customer service, and an extensive range of increased benefits to engage its members. As the first direct health insurance fund in Germany BIG has pursued a consistently well-consideredand straightforward concept from the very start: that of the direct principle. This way we save costs. The idea behind BIG can be described quite quickly: a consistent online focus and a new quality of service. We have no need of expensive branch offices and instead BIG uses modern methods of communication. Low administrative costs, excellent value for money and outstanding service are the conclusive result. BIG views itself as a health logistics expert. This means: innovative services for the individual and modern, sustainable concepts for the system overall. The prime focus is on optimum provision of health care. At the same time they want to offer their policyholders opportunities for savings and useful extra benefits. The subject of preventive care is also a special priority for us: since this is how to promote health in a targeted way, illnesses are prevented and the burden on the health care system is lessened. Flat hierarchy structures and a modern staff concept make BIG flexible: decisions can be taken quickly and without a lot of bureaucracy, the clear structure promotes a business attitude and encourages individual members of staff to act resourcefully. This is why each individual at BIG has a sense of responsibility for the success of the whole company.
