Michiel Haasbroek's work experience includes roles in various companies and organizations. In 2006, they had an internship at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2020, they worked as a Visiting Academic Research Fellow at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) gGmbH. Currently, they are the Chief Finance and Risk Officer at BIL Suisse, a role they have held since September 2022, and previously served as the Chief Risk Officer.

Michiel Haasbroek's education history includes a variety of academic pursuits. In 1990 to 1997, they attended Beekvliet and received a diploma, though the field of study is not specified. From 1997 to 1999, they pursued a BA in Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Amsterdam. Following this, from 2003 to 2006, they studied Political Science and History at the Universität Trier and obtained an MA degree. In 2008 to 2009, they attended TIAS School for Business and Society and earned an MSc in Financial Management. Haasbroek then pursued their academic journey further and from 2011 to 2016, they obtained their Dr. Phil. (PhD) in the field of Political economy of banking reform in China at Ruhr University Bochum. Later on, in 2020 and 2021, they worked as a Visiting Research Fellow at Xi'An Jiaotong Liverpool University Suzhou and as a Senior Guest Lecturer at Ruhr University Bochum, respectively. Michiel'sstudies primarily revolved around subjects like political economy, banking reform in China, and East Asian Studies - Political Economy.
