Kim Johnston

Director, Information Technology at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Kim Johnston leads the foundation’s information technology strategy, planning, and management.

Before joining the foundation in 2016, Kim founded and co-built a successful consulting group specializing in strategy, project, and program management in the Pacific Northwest’s technology sector. As co-CEO, she ran the company’s operations division, where her extensive background across critical business functions helped scale up the firm. After 10 years, she orchestrated the sale of the company to a local consulting firm.

Earlier, Kim was a senior leader at Microsoft, where she was responsible for leading the strategic , financial, and operational aspects of the company’s engagement with the public sector.

Kim has an undergraduate degree in communication from the University of Washington, along with multiple certifications. She has served on several nonprofit boards, including as board vice president and chair of the nominating committee for the Delta Zeta sorority, an international women’s organization.
