Jens Nielsen

CEO at BioInnovation Institute

Jens Nielsen has a diverse work experience spanning several prestigious institutions. Jens started their career as a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Hannover in 1989. Following that, they worked at DTU - Technical University of Denmark, where they served as a Research Associate Professor from 1990 to 1996, and later became an Associate Professor from 1996 to 1998. Jens then became a Professor at DTU in 1998, where they ran a research group on microbial physiology and metabolic engineering, and held various leadership positions including Deputy Director and Director of the Center for Process Biotechnology, as well as Founder and Director of the Center for Microbial Biotechnology.

In 2008, they transitioned to Chalmers University of Technology, where they were recruited as a Professor to build life science activities at the institution. Jens established the Area of Advance Life Science Engineering and served as its Director from 2010 to 2016.

In 2011, they returned to DTU as a Professor and served as one of the founding Scientific Directors for the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability. Jens held various roles within the center, including Chief Science Officer and Adjunct Professor.

Finally, in 2019, Jens Nielsen became the CEO of BioInnovation Institute, a large initiative funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. In this role, they oversee the support and incubation of start-up companies in the life sciences field and manages various grant giving instruments.

Throughout their career, Jens Nielsen has built a strong reputation in the field of life sciences and has actively contributed to the development and growth of various research and innovation centers.

Jens Nielsen pursued their education at DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Jens completed their Master of Science in Chemical Engineering between 1981 and 1986. Later on, they further enhanced their knowledge by obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biochemical Engineering from the same institution, completing it between 1986 and 1989.
