Research Scientist II at Biomason

Kelsey Deaton, PhD has a diverse range of work experience. From 2008 to 2009, they worked as a Research Assistant at the Cardinale Research Lab, assisting with various research projects. From 2009 to 2011, they worked as an Independent Research Intern at the UCSB Marine Science Institute, conducting their own experiment for a Senior Honors Thesis project. In 2011, they worked as a Tutor at Campus Learning Assistance Services, providing individual tutoring for fellow undergraduates in environmental studies and ecology. Also in 2011, they worked as a Mentor and English Instructor at AmerikanoEstudios, where they mentored children and instructed English classes for adults. In 2012, they worked as an Emergency Medical Technician at AmbuServe, providing emergency medical and life support procedures. From 2012 to 2013, they worked as an Associate Producer & Researcher at Earth Soul Productions, assisting in the production of a documentary and securing funding for the project. From 2013 to 2016, they worked as a Research Assistant at Mango Materials, conducting research and leading a lab-scale downstream-processing research team. During this time, they also supervised lab assistants and interns. From 2016 to 2023, they worked at Duke University as a PhD Candidate & Graduate Researcher, where they focused on metabolic network modeling, microbiome engineering, and biodegradation. In addition to their research, they served as an Executive Committee Member & Student Advocate from 2017 to 2020. Currently, they work as a Research Scientist II at Biomason.

Kelsey Deaton, PhD, holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Environmental/Environmental Health Engineering from Duke University. Kelsey completed their PhD program in 2022. Prior to their PhD, they obtained a Master's of Science degree in Environmental/Environmental Health Engineering from Duke University in 2019. Kelsey also holds dual Bachelor's degrees in Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara. Kelsey earned these degrees from 2007 to 2011.
