Maël Fabien

Maël Fabien has a diverse work experience that spans various roles and industries.

In 2015, they founded Wanago, the first van crowdfunding platform, which established partnerships with insurance companies and received funding for several projects. Maël successfully ran the company for three years.

In 2016, Maël worked as a student assistant in Corporate Finance at HEC Lausanne - La Faculté des Hautes Etudes Commerciales de l'Université de Lausanne.

Maël then joined Vaudoise Assurances in 2018 as an actuary intern, where they were responsible for non-life product pricing and conducted market analysis and portfolio analysis.

In 2019, they worked as a data scientist intern at Anasen, developing an innovative approach to automatically understand information extraction and transformation needed by the user on tabular data.

Maël also worked as an NLP data scientist at Veamly and as a machine learning and cloud lecturer at VIVADATA, where they taught and created course content.

Starting in 2020, Maël worked as a Ph.D. candidate at the Idiap Research Institute, focusing on the ROXANNE European Union Horizon 2020 project, which aimed to combat organized crime using real-time network, text, and speaker analytics.

In 2021, they co-founded biped.ai, a company that developed a smart shoulder-worn harness using autonomous driving technology to guide blind and partially sighted people with 3D sounds, enhancing their accessibility.

Currently, Maël is a Fellow at Next Chapter, beginning in 2023. Apart from their formal work experience, they have also been involved in various side hustles, including running a tech blog and a personal bento project.

Maël Fabien began their education by earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics from HEC Lausanne - The Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne from 2013 to 2016. They continued their studies at the same institution and obtained a Master of Science in Actuarial Science from 2016 to 2018. After that, Maël pursued a Post Master’s Degree in Data Science and Big Data at Télécom Paris from 2018 to 2020, focusing on the field of artificial intelligence. Currently, Maël is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2020 to 2021, with a focus on speech processing, graph theory, and machine learning.
