Lee Hazelwood's work experience begins in 2000 as a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. From 2004 to 2007, they worked as a Performance Improvement and Safety Specialist at National Air Traffic Services. They then served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Medical Research Council from 2007 to 2010, focusing on developing functional models related to genotype and phenotype.
Starting in 2010, Hazelwood became the BHRC Bioinformatics Group Leader at the University of Leeds, where they provided computational and mathematical support to biomedical scientists and developed research methodologies. In 2013, they joined the University of Cambridge as a Senior Computational Biologist for Cancer Research UK, working on physics-based models of stem cell fate decisions and statistical identification of mutational profiles in intestinal tumors.
In 2020, Hazelwood took on the role of Visiting Researcher at the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences. They also joined bit.bio in the same year, initially as a Principal Scientist and later as the CellSpace Lead, contributing to the theoretical foundations of cell states and developing technology to enable the discovery of cell states at scale.
Dr. Lee Hazelwood obtained a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Southampton, where they studied from 1994 to 1998. Prior to that, they completed their undergraduate studies at the University of East Anglia, earning a BSc degree in Physics between 1991 and 1994.
