Patrick O’Neil

Patrick O’Neil is the Chief Data Scientist at BlackSky. Patrick has also served as the Chief Innovation Officer and has been with the company for 7 years and 4 months. Prior to joining BlackSky, Patrick was a Research Scientist at GeoEye Analytics for 1 year and 9 months. Patrick has also been an Advisory Board Member for the Center for Mathematics and AI at George Mason University for 2 years and 3 months, and a Graduate Research Assistant at George Mason University for 4 years and 5 months. Patrick began their career as a Computing Sciences Intern at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where they developed a massively parallel watershed algorithm based on topological persistence to be run on NERSC's Edison, a Cray XC30 supercomputer.

Patrick O'Neil received their PhD in Mathematics from George Mason University in 2017. Their research focused on developing energy flows for smoothing and denoising point cloud data. Additionally, they focused on applying topological data analysis techniques to the analysis of the quality of the smoothing/denoising operation. Prior to their PhD, O'Neil received their Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from George Mason University in 2014. Patrick also holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, which they received in 2011.
