The steel industry is a major source of greenhouse gases, accounting for 9% of global CO₂ emissions. Established in 2021, Blastr Green Steel aims to decarbonize steel production by creating an integrated steel value chain leveraging Nordic advantages. The company will utilize local raw materials and fossil-free energy and apply a circular economy thinking throughout the value chain to produce cost-competitive, ultra-low CO₂ steel with ~90% lower scope 1-3 CO₂ emissions than conventional steel production. Blastr will establish a state-of-the-art steel plant with integrated hydrogen production at Inkoo, Finland, producing 2.5 million tonnes of flat-rolled steel annually. Blastr will also establish an iron ore pellet plant producing 6 million tonnes of high-quality direct reduction pellets to supply its steel plant, as well as the world market for direct reduction pellets. Blastr Green Steel is part of Vanir Green Industries and it will be one of the largest industry start-ups in the Nordic region
