Dr. Sam Owilly's work experience begins in 2009 as a Project Officer at ITDG - EA. Dr. Sam then becomes a Project Officer at Practical Action from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 to 2014, they serve as an Area Coordinator at Practical Action. Dr. Sam then moves to Practical Action East Africa Regional Office (EARO) where they take on the role of Head of Program and Specialist - Food, Agriculture, and Disaster Risk Reduction (FADRR) from 2014 to 2016. During this time, they successfully deliver multiple donor projects benefiting over 300,000 pastoralists and communities. In 2016, Dr. Owilly works as an Independent Consultant briefly and then becomes an Advisor at Land O' Lakes Inc. (IDD). In 2018, they join BOMA.ngo as a Program Manager. Dr. Sam later progresses to become the Kenya Program Director and Country Director, before assuming the position of Chief Scaling Officer. Currently, they serve as the Chief Executive Officer at BOMA.ngo, where they oversee the organization's vision and strategy, team and culture, programs and products, partnerships, revenue and fundraising, infrastructure, technology and systems, communications and marketing, and board relations.
Dr. Sam Owilly has a diverse education history. Dr. Sam holds a Master's Degree in Climate Change and Adaptation from the University of Nairobi, which they obtained from 2014 to 2016. Dr. Sam also has a Master's Degree in Project Planning and Management from the same university, earned from 2009 to 2015. Dr. Owilly further expanded their knowledge with a Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation in 2008. Their educational journey began with a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi, which they completed from 2002 to 2007. Additionally, they have pursued professional development through the Perennial Fellowship Program, focusing on leadership, in 2021. Currently, they are pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Strathmore Business School (SBS), with an expected completion date in 2023. In terms of additional certifications, Dr. Owilly is recognized as the Climate Information Prize (Wazo) winner in 2016.
