Stuart Sherman

Senior Executive Director, Program Development at Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware

Stu Sherman has been with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware since 1994. He began as the Physical Director at the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club when the building first opened, and later became Program Director (1997) and has served as the Executive Director since 1998. In that time, the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club has served tens of thousands of kids in the Bear/Newark/Glasgow area.

Stu grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1991. His first job out of college was with a minor league baseball team in Hampton, Virginia, a team that would later move to Wilmington, Delaware (1993) to become the Blue Rocks. Stu moved with the team and served as the Community Relations Director in it’s inaugural season. During his community work with the Blue Rocks, Stu became familiar with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware and the new Club they were building on Route 40. After the baseball season was completed, Stu moved to the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club where he has been ever since.

Under Stu’s direction the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club has excelled in a variety of programs. The basketball and aquatics programs are among the largest in the state. The Teen Program boasts the largest numbers thanks in part to a stand-alone Teen Center that was built and opened in 2000. Stu served as the Regional Chair for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Keystone Conference and has implemented numerous teen programs over the years. Greater Newark’s Child Care program has earned a 5-star rating, the highest awarded, from Delaware Stars since entering into the program in 2012.

Stu is very active in the community through volunteer efforts with the National Brain Tumor Society, STRIVE: How You Lead Matters, and Camp Abilities – a sports camp for kids who are blind. Stu has been able to provide Club teens with an opportunity to lead and volunteer at numerous non-profits, especially with these three charities. Stu is also an active member of the Christiana Rotary Club, where he has been a member since 2000 and served as a two-time President. In 2014, Stu was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow – the highest award given to a Rotarian.

In February 2019, Stu was named the 2018 Joseph H. Dulin Staff of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware and in May 2019 Stu was promoted to the Executive Leadership Team and transitioned into a new role as Senior Executive Director, Program Development. In this new role Stuart will provide executive leadership and direction in assessment of program effectiveness, especially as it relates to program fun, impact, and appeal (Stuart’s specialty and passion). He will assist with providing strategies, programs, activities, staffing, and equipment needed to improve the impact of our programs. He also will assist with developing strategic alliances, collaborations, financial and/or in-kind support for local Clubs and School Sites statewide. As a result of his team’s successful efforts, Clubs and School Sites will have greater capacity for delivering high quality, fun, and appealing programs and activities. Stuart will continue to take point with Greater Newark’s resource development and Unit Board development.

Stu resides in Bear, Delaware with his wife Melissa, son Clayton and daughter Caroline. The Boys & Girls Clubs have been a second family to the entire Sherman Family for 25 years and counting.
