Matthew Gee

Matthew Gee has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Matthew is currently the Co-Founder & CEO of BrightHive since 2017. Prior to that, they worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Data Science and Public Policy at the University of Chicago from 2014. In this role, they led machine learning and data science research initiatives in various areas such as labor market dynamics and energy use.

In 2015, Matthew co-founded The Impact Lab and served as a Principal, overseeing the development and commercialization of data products and services. Additionally, they co-founded and served as the CTO of Open Energy Efficiency from 2015 to 2017, where they developed the first open standard for automated measurement and verification of energy efficiency investments.

Matthew also has research experience, working as a Research Fellow at the Urban Center for Computing and Data at the University of Chicago from 2013 to 2015. There, they focused on developing new methods for understanding urban dynamics using both open and private administrative data.

Before their research roles, Matthew co-founded Effortless Energy, Inc. in 2012 and served as the CTO until 2015. Matthew also co-founded and directed the Center for Impact Measurement from 2012 to 2014, where they worked with non-profits and city government to implement impact measurement and data-driven decision making projects.

Matthew started their career as a Summer Fellow at the United States Department of the Treasury: Office of Energy and Environment in 2011, where they created proposals for new public-private partnerships and developed fraud detection systems. Matthew also worked as a Research Analyst at the United States Treasury: Office of the Comptroller of the Currency from 2007 to 2010, where they built systems for detecting lending violations and developed models for understanding patterns in foreclosure and loss mitigation.

Matthew Gee began their education at Brigham Young University in 2000 and completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics in 2007. Matthew then pursued their further studies at the University of Chicago, where they earned their Master's degree in Public Policy from 2010 to 2012. Following that, Matthew enrolled as a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago in Computational Policy from 2012 to 2014.
