Ouswatta Perera has extensive experience in civil engineering and project management. Starting as a Resident Civil Engineer in the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation in 1999, they went on to work as a Technical Specialist/Project Manager at the Environment Agency. Here, they focused on flood defense projects and asset management until 2010. Moving to Australia, Ouswatta Perera worked as a Principal Engineer at Mackay Regional Council briefly before joining Brisbane City Council as a Senior Engineer. Their role involved advising on city planning, infrastructure, and disaster management. Currently, Ouswatta Perera holds the position of Principal Engineer - Civil at Brisbane Airport Corporation since 2022.
Ouswatta Perera earned a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Moratuwa from 1994 to 1999. In addition, they obtained several certifications including being a Chartered Professional Engineer, Fellow of Engineers Australia, APEC Engineer, and Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland.
