Manuel Rivas has a diverse work experience in the field of genetics and biochemistry. Manuel started their career as a Biochemistry Instructor at MIT in 2010, where they taught in a summer program for high school students interested in science and engineering.
Manuel then pursued their DPhil in Human Genetics at the University of Oxford from 2010 to 2015, where their research focused on the medical relevance and functional consequences of protein truncating variants. During this time, they were supervised by Peter Donnelly and Mark McCarthy.
Following their studies at Oxford, Rivas worked as a Research Affiliate and Computational Scientist at the Broad Institute from 2014 to 2016. Manuel then joined Stanford University as an Assistant Professor in 2016.
In 2018, Rivas joined Maze Therapeutics, initially as a Maze Fellow and later became the Head of Statistical Genetics. Manuel held these roles until June 2023.
Rivas also has experience in co-founding a company called Broadwing Bio in 2020, where they currently serve as a Co-Founder. Manuel is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at Broadwing Bio. Additionally, they have served on the Scientific Advisory Boards of Interline Therapeutics, 54gene, and Related Sciences.
In 2021, Rivas became the VP of Human Genetics at HIBio. Manuel is also involved in other scientific advisory roles and affiliations.
Overall, Rivas has a strong background in genetics and biochemistry, with a focus on research, teaching, and leadership roles.
Manuel Rivas completed their education with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Human/Medical Genetics from the University of Oxford, which they pursued from 2010 to 2015. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2004 to 2008.
