S.L. Marquez has a diverse and extensive work experience in the legal field. Starting in 2004, they worked as a Legal Assistant at Weil Gotshal and Manges until 2006. They then interned at Harvard Defenders in 2007. In 2008, they worked as a Summer Associate at Sidley Austin LLP. From 2009 to 2010, they served as a Legal Fellow at LatinoJustice PRLDEF, participating in civil rights impact litigation. They rejoined Sidley Austin LLP in 2011 as an Associate until 2012. Following this, they worked as a Law Clerk at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York from 2012 to 2013. Returning to Sidley Austin LLP, S.L. Marquez became an Associate until 2018. During this time, they handled complex commercial litigation, white-collar investigations, and represented LGBTQ asylum applicants. In 2018, they joined Brooklyn Defenders, starting as a Staff Attorney in the Immigration Practice. They then advanced to roles such as Civil Rights Attorney - Immigration, Senior Attorney - Civil Rights & Law Reform, and Associate Director/Interim Acting Director of Civil Rights & Law Reform. Currently, S.L. Marquez holds the position of Director of Civil Rights & Law Reform at Brooklyn Defenders.
S.L. Marquez attended The Holton-Arms School from 1989 to 2000, although no degree or field of study is specified. Later, from 2000 to 2004, Marquez pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia University, with a combination of majors in International Relations & Statistics, Philosophy, and Creative Writing.
