Kurt M. Zernich is a member, Senior Managing Director, Director of Asset Management, and General Counsel for Brookwood and General Counsel of Yesway. Kurt oversees the asset and property management functions for all of Brookwood’s properties. In his capacity as Director of Asset Management, Kurt manages all property management staff, establishes standardized policies and procedures and best practices for each property in Brookwood’s portfolio, works with all property managers to implement each property’s strategic business plan, supports the asset and property managers in the development and execution of specific leasing and marketing plans for each property, oversees all capital implement projects, and reviews and approves the annual operating budgets for each property in the portfolio. In his capacity as General Counsel, Kurt is responsible for providing senior management with effective advice on corporate strategies and their implementation, structures and manages the company’s internal legal staff, serves as the company’s principal legal advisor on all major transactions, including acquisitions, financings, dispositions, and joint ventures, advises on current and future business structures and legal entities, and manages the evaluation, selection, retention, and management of all outside counsel. In addition, Kurt assists in structuring Brookwood’s real estate and corporate acquisitions. Kurt is a member of Brookwood’s and Yesway’s Executive and Investment Committees.
Prior to joining Brookwood, Kurt was associated with the Chicago law firm of Ungaretti & Harris, where his primary focus was on private equity transactions and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to entering the practice of law, Kurt worked at the Pennsylvania Treasury Department overseeing the cash management division and assisting in the management of a $6 billion portfolio.
Kurt is a graduate of the University of Virginia, and he received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and a Juris Doctor degree from the Northwestern University School of Law. In 2018, Kurt completed the Oxford Strategic Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School.
