Maria E. Bernal, PhD has a diverse work experience in the field of education. Maria E. started their career as a Bilingual/ESL Teacher at John Jay Elementary School in 1995 and worked there until 1999. In 2000, they joined Miami-Dade College as a Professor of English for Academic Purposes and stayed there until 2003. Maria then joined Broward College, where they held various roles including Associate Dean of Communications, Professor of English for Academic Purposes, and most recently, Senior Director of International Student Success. Since 2020, Maria has also been working as an Adjunct Professor of Higher Education Administration at Barry University.

Maria E. Bernal, PhD, completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Leadership and Administration (Higher Education) at Barry University from 2009 to 2019. Prior to that, they obtained a Master of Education (MEd) in Curriculum and Instruction/Bilingual-ESL Education from National Louis University from 1995 to 1998. Maria E. also received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Teaching of Social Studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where they studied from 1990 to 1994.
