Brunello Cucinelli
Andrea Pontremoli was born in Saugus (USA) in 1957. In 1980 he was hired by IBM as a maintenance engineer and then climbed the career ladder to become a European specialist for large computers. In 1985 he started his managerial career in the company’s Bolzano branch, taking on positions of increasing responsibility both in Italy and abroad. Eventually, in 1994, he was asked to join the workgroup that would lead to the creation, two years later, of IBM Global Services in Italy. From 1995 to 1997 he was Director of Integrated Technology Services for Italy and in 1997 his responsibilities were extended to include the markets of southern Europe. He left Milan in 1999 and moved to Paris. At first, he was appointed Vice President Operations of Global Services for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, then later became General Manager Integrated Technology Services for the same geographic area. He returned to Italy in August 2001 to take up the post of General Manager IBM Global Services for Southern Europe, managing the work of some 25,000 people. He held this role until June 2004 when he was appointed President and Managing Director of IBM Italy. Andrea Pontremoli resigned his position with IBM Italy in October 2007 to join Gian Paolo Dallara in a new challenging experience at the head of Dallara Automobili, a long-established firm boasting an impressive track record, collected all over the world, but always placed in Varano de’ Melegari, Parma province, Italy.
He has entered the capital of the company and became both Managing Director and CEO with responsibilities for fostering new, innovative strategies to boost the growth of the small company which, since 1972 designed and made racing cars (single-seaters and others) that competed in the top races. Since November 2007, he is Chief of the “Executive Master in Technology and Innovation Management”, at ALMA Graduate School Università di Bologna. Since April 2008, he is in the Board of Directors of Barilla S.p.A.. Since May 2012, he is Director and Lead Indipendent Director in Brunello Cucinelli S.p.A.. Since January 2017 he is member of the Board of Directors of Università degli Studi di Parma. In 2004 the University of Parma awarded him an honorary degree in Computer Engineering for his expertise acquired in his years of management and for his unswerving commitment to the technological development of local companies. On 2 June 2006 was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the President of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
