Ivan R. Shumkov, PhD

Ivan R. Shumkov, PhD has a diverse work experience. Ivan R. currently holds the position of Visiting Professor at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, starting in January 2023. Prior to this, they founded Build World in October 2022, a company providing innovative solutions to various organizations. Additionally, they founded Build Academy in November 2013, an online learning platform offering architecture and design courses. Ivan also worked as the Principal of ISA - Ivan Shumkov Architecture since July 2004. In 2008, they founded the Harvard Architectural and Urban Society. Ivan R. briefly served as the Chief Architect for the Municipality of Blagoevgrad from January 2022 to March 2022, and as Chief Expert for Sofia Municipality from May 2021 to December 2021. Before that, they were a Senior Advisor at the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria from August 2020 to April 2021. Ivan's academic experience includes being an Adjunct Associate Professor at New York University from September 2014 to June 2020, and Vice President at e-DAU from January 2013 to May 2020.

In 2004, they embarked on a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD program in Architecture at the same university, completing it in 2009.

In the years 2006 to 2008, Ivan attended Harvard University, where they obtained a Master of Architecture II (MArch II) degree. During this time, their studies focused on Architecture, Urbanism, Technology, and Real Estate. Additionally, they pursued further education and research at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation from 2008 to 2010 as a PhD and Post-doctoral Scholar.
