Andrew Wylie

Partner at Buro Happold

Andrew is a Partner with 15 years of experience in leading multi-disciplinary projects both within the UK and internationally.

He specialises in complex new build and refurbishment projects with particular emphasis on the cultural sector.

A chartered engineer, Andrew’s early projects for Buro Happold include the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, in which he designed a 1,030-seat auditorium containing a thrust stage, the first of its kind in the world. He was also instrumental in designing and delivering Marlow Theatre in Kent, The Factory, Manchester and The Heritage Houses project in Doha, Qatar.

For Andrew, creating theatres, museums and galleries is immensely rewarding, because the ‘clients are so passionate about their projects’. Andrew’s talent lies in empathising with and understanding what each client’s issues are, explaining the construction process and reaching mutual understanding with all stakeholders with tact and precision, every time. His diplomacy, technical skills and experience in dealing with clients and architects make him an immensely valuable member of his design team at Buro Happold.

Andrew completed a Masters in Inter Disciplinary Design for the Built Environment at the University of Cambridge. He is a member of the TRADA industrial advisory board (Timber Research and Development Association), advising them on maintaining their relevance and providing up to date advice on current trends in the industry.

A visiting tutor at the University of Bath, Andrew has spoken on collection storage, integrated design and engineering conservation. He is also a member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians.
