Sean Summers

Chief Scientist at Button

Sean Summers is currently the Chief Scientist at Button, Inc. Sean's previous positions include Visiting Researcher at UCSF, Postdoctoral Researcher at ETH Zurich, and Visiting Researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Sean also has experience as a Control Engineer at Northrop Grumman Corporation.

Sean's research has spanned a number of different areas, but they are perhaps best known for their work on using real-time data, predictive intelligence, and actuation (light) to precisely control the abundance of protein in a population of living yeast cells. This work was published in Nature Biotechnology and covered by BBC, Forbes, Popular Science, among others.

Sean's experience with robots began with their work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where they built an autonomous multi-mode robot for use in undesirable situations - from concept to patent to development. Sean continued this work as a Control Engineer at Northrop Grumman Corporation, where they spent two years developing robotic systems.

Sean's most recent position has been as a Senior Staff Scientist at Button, Inc., where they have continued their work on developing predictive intelligence systems.

Sean Summers has a Doctor of Philosophy in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering from ETH Zürich, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UC San Diego, and a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from UC San Diego.

Their manager is Michael Jaconi, Co-Founder & CEO. Some of their coworkers include Chris Maddern - Co-Founder & Chief Innovation Officer, Margaret Johnson - VP, Tap, and Mike Sepesi - VP, Finance.
