Kate Schutz

Service Design Lead at Calgary Public Library

Kate Schutz has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Kate was a Board Member at CanLearn Society starting from 2022. Prior to that, they worked as a Service Design Lead at Calgary Public Library since 2016, where they focused on designing programs and services for students and teachers. In this role, they supervised three full-time staff members. Kate is also an independent artist specializing in oil paintings since 1998. From 2009 to 2016, they served as the Education Manager at the National Music Centre, responsible for developing education programs and managing a staff of education leaders and volunteers. During their tenure, they led the design and implementation of a Strategic plan for Education as part of a capital campaign, re-brand, and new building construction.

Kate Schutz has a comprehensive education history. Kate obtained a Masters of Education in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Calgary, completing their studies from 2013 to 2016. Prior to that, they attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2011 for a Project Zero Summer Institute on Education. In 2003 and 2004, Kate pursued Interior Design at Mount Royal University, earning a BIDes degree. Before that, from 1998 to 2000, they completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Fine and Studio Arts at the University of Alberta. Kate began their higher education journey at Alberta University of the Arts from 1996 to 1998, where they obtained a BFA focused on drawing. Additionally, Kate has acquired several certifications, including "Being Trauma Aware: Making A Difference in the Lives of Children and Youth" from Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in 2022, "Teaching Foundational Reading Skills" from North Carolina State University in 2019, and "IndEdu200x: Reconciliation Through Indigenous Education" from The University of British Columbia in 2017.
